The New York Times’ Best TV Shows of 2015

The City and Us | NYTimes Best TV Shows of 2015

What’s your favorite TV show? There have been so many good shows on this Fall. What have you been watching? Dan and I are into a handful of excellent ones, and I was curious to see if our favorites matched up with any on the New York Times TV critics best of 2015 list…

James Poniwozik, Mike Hale and Neil Genzlinger each picked 10 shows for the list (in no particular order). There’s some overlap, but here’s the complete list…

James Poniwozik’s Picks:

1. “The Americans” (FX)
2. “blackish” (ABC)
3. “Halt and Catch Fire” (AMC)
4. “The Jinx” (HBO)
5. “The Leftovers” (HBO)
6. “Master of None” (Netflix)
7. “Rectify” (SundanceTV)
8. “Review” (Comedy Central)
9. “Transparent” (Amazon Prime)
10. “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” (Netflix)

Mike Hale’s Picks:

1. “Louie” (FX)
2. “The Americans” (FX)
3. “The Knick” (Cinemax)
4. “The Jinx” (HBO)
5. “Fargo” (FX)
6. “Broad City” (Comedy Central)
7. “Justified” (FX)
8. “Transparent” (Amazon Prime)
9. “Moone Boy” (Hulu)
10. “Penny Dreadful” (Showtime)

Neil Genzlinger’s Picks:

1. “The Jinx” (HBO)
2. “Mimi and Dona” (PBS)
3. “Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies” (PBS)
4. “The Brain With David Eagleman” (PBS)
5. “Of Miracles and Men” (ESPN)
6. “The Seventies” (CNN)
7. “Documentary Now!” (IFC)
8. “Dawn of Humanity,” “Nova” (PBS)
9. “Looks Like Laury, Sounds Like Laury” (World Channel)
10. “Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story” (MSNBC)

We kept our list to five picks each, but since we have the same top four, I added five more at the bottom of the list…

1. “Fargo” (FX)
2. “Narcos” (Netflix)
3. “Game of Thrones” (HBO)
4. “The Walking Dead” (AMC)
5 (Dan). “The Last Man on Earth” (FOX)
5 (Kelley). “Homeland” (Showtime)
6. “Transparent” (Amazon Prime)
7. “Penny Dreadful” (Showtime)
8. “The Americans” (FX)
9. “The Jinx” (HBO)–was a little surprised this was listed by each critic, but I completely agree–it’s fascinating!
10. “Bloodline” (Netflix)

Bonus: Top on our list to start next: Master of None and the new season of Louie.

What do you think? Agree? Disagree? What would you add? Any shows you didn’t like at all?

I’ve never even heard of “The Jinx”— apparently going to have to check that out! We’re super late to the game but are currently binge watching Downton. And agree with Dan on “The Last Man on Earth” : ) Master of None is on our list too. Do you watch “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt?” I think that one’s probably in my wheel house..

Meggie, “The Jinx” will give you chills. Especially the final episode. Check it out asap. I watched part of the first episode of the “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and couldn’t get into it. But I didn’t give it much of a chance. I also want to get into “Difficult People”. It has received a lot of praise from the comedy world and has a lot of solid cameos.
