My friend Amy and her adorable kids have been making chalk mosaics lately. “It was part of Cameron’s kindergarten work. A ‘First, Next, Last’ sequence lesson. ‘First,’ we put tape down. ‘Next,’ we color. ‘Last,’ we pull the tape off,” she told me. Don’t these look fun? I love all the colors! Here are the steps to make your own chalk mosaics if you’re looking for an easy project.
Supplies:
Directions:
- Start by sweeping the area of the sidewalk or driveway that you’ll be using. You can also make chalk mosaics on fences, concrete walls, decks, or garage doors if you’d like.
- With your painter’s tape, make a large square or rectangle, or try something a little more challenging, like a heart-shaped chalk mosaic or a geometric animal.
- Once you have your exterior shape, start taping off sections on the inside. There is no rhyme or reason, just make any size or shape you want.
- Make sure the tape is sealed to the concrete to get those crisp chalk lines.
- Start coloring! Again, no rhyme or reason here, but you may not want two of the same colors next to each other.
- If you want a smooth, solid look, you can rub your fingers over the chalk to fill in between the bumps in the concrete.
- When all the inside areas are filled in, pull the tape off, and voilà!
Amy said her kids worked on their chalk mosaics for around 45 minutes each, so if you’re looking for an outdoor activity that’s easy and will keep your kid’s attention for more than a few minutes, give this project a try!
Thanks so much, Amy! xo
P.S. How to make a piñata.
