Instead of the regular kitchen sponge, my sweet grandmother, Bette, knits dishcloths with 100% cotton yarn and gives them to family and friends to use in their kitchens. Last time Dan and I visited home, I sorted through Gram’s collection of colorful, handmade dishcloths and picked a few to bring back to NYC with us. Aside from the fact that they clean dishes and wipe down counters, they are much prettier than the everyday sink sponge, and it’s so special to have something handmade by my Gram in our NYC apartment.
Gram gave me a few details on the making of these dishcloths–which will only make sense to you if you’re familiar with knitting terms (way over my head ;) ): “I use a simple paper pattern, which is cast on 5 stitches on increase 1 stitch every row to 40 stitches and then decrease 1 stitch every row back to 5 stitches. Every row is knitted. Go to “5 stitches on” and insert #9 needles.”
The beautiful yarn is from Lily’s Sugar’n Cream line, and the ombre yarns result in the pretty striped patterns you see pictured here (I love this Moondance color).
Thanks so much, Gram! xoxo

That pic of Gram was a selfie that I so nicely cropped myself out of! It’s my favorite shot of her! xx
It’s such a beautiful picture of her :) xo
