Have you seen previews for the new IFC docu-comedy Documentary Now! created by Bill Hader, Fred Armisen, and Seth Meyers? The six-episode series is hosted by Helen Mirren and is a parody of some of the world’s best-known documentaries.
Here’s what IFC says about the new series, premiering this Thursday: “Starring Fred Armisen and Bill Hader, each episode is shot in a different style of documentary filmmaking, and honors some of the most important stories that didn’t actually happen.
Paying homage to everyone from the Maysles to Errol Morris, topics range from guerilla-style filmmakers who vastly underestimate the danger in exposing a drug cartel to a soft rock doc about a Chicago band’s rise to fame with their hit album “Catalina Breeze.” ”
And Seth Meyers told Entertainment Weekly, “A lot of the great documentaries bring you ‘never-before-seen’ footage. And even though in this case every part of our show is ‘never-before-seen’ footage, within that footage there will be scenes framed as ‘never-before-seen.’ ”
Here’s the trailer, if you’d like to watch…
The first episode is a tribute to the 1975 documentary Grey Gardens, the story of eccentric “Big Edie” Bouvier Beale and her adult daughter “Little Edie” living in a dilapidated East Hampton mansion, and looks hilarious.
Thoughts? Will you watch it? Have you seen any good comedies lately?

Can’t wait!!!!!
Watched the first episode this weekend. It was a little slow but Armisen and Hader are hilarious. It must have been so much fun to be on that Set. I’ll definitely tune back in for future episodes. I like the idea that it will be a different documentary each week.
Some of the content on the show first appeared in the web series – the “Women Women First” feminist bookstore sketch and its owners’ characters, Toni and Candice originated there. The series is set and filmed in Portland, Oregon.
