The tenants before us in our Brooklyn apartment had two Staghorn Ferns hanging from the walls behind their couch. I distinctly remember seeing them when we viewed our apartment because they were big and mounted on these unique wooden plaques. They looked more like art than plants and the dark green, antler-shaped leaves popped against the apartment’s white walls. The tenants bought them at the Brooklyn Flea a few years ago and said the plants are great for them because they require very little watering and attention.
For the life of me, I couldn’t remember the name of the plants until my Mom texted me the picture above of a Staghorn Fern hanging in her colleague’s classroom (thanks, Mom!). This particular plant is 10 years old. Pretty amazing! Now I can’t stop thinking about hanging a pair of these plants in our apartment. I love the idea of adding a Staghorn Fern to a gallery wall like Megan Gilger points out in this step-by-step DIY project for mounting a Staghorn Fern.
A little side note: Staghorn Ferns get their name because their fronds look like the antlers of a staghorn deer.

With prices for a mounted staghorn fern ranging from $85 to $150, I wasn’t ready to splurge on a tricky plant I might not be able to keep alive.
I just had a huge fern fall from my tree and I am going to cut out the pups and try this. I never had one indoors before. Do you mist them? Outside they get rained on.
